Completion of Detailed Implementation Guidelines for Cooperation to Fulfill the Paris Agreement
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Jeong Gi-yong, Director General of the Climate Environment Science Diplomacy Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of the Environment from the 18th to the 21st, meeting with Tamaki Tsukada, Ambassador for Global Issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Hiroshi Ono, Director General of the Water, Air and Environment Bureau at the Ministry of the Environment, respectively.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 21st, Director General Jeong explained the significance of the upcoming '2nd P4G (Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030) Summit' to be held in Seoul from June 29 to 30 during this visit, and delivered invitations to Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, requesting Japan's participation. The Japanese side expressed a favorable intention to consider the invitation.
Furthermore, both sides shared opinions on key agendas for climate change response, including the renewal of NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) and submission of LEDS (Long-term low Emissions Development Strategies), as well as the direction for progress in climate change negotiations.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "It was agreed to promote cooperation to complete detailed implementation guidelines for the Paris Agreement at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) this November," and added, "We also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation mechanisms to address regional air and marine pollution issues, such as NEACAP (North-East Clean Air Partnership) and NOWPAP (Northeast Pacific Action Plan)."

Additionally, Director General Jeong visited the REI (Renewable Energy Institute) and IGES (Institute for Global Environmental Strategy) in Japan. He discussed bilateral cooperation with Korean research institutions and ways to expand cooperation on the international stage regarding issues such as the P4G Summit, air quality, climate change response, and renewable energy.
