Right After Samsung Unpacked... Xiaomi Also Launches 5G Flagship Mi10 and Pro Models
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Chinese company Xiaomi unveiled its 5G flagship smartphones Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro immediately after Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Unpacked event. Despite being equipped with a 108-megapixel camera featured in the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the price was set between 680,000 and 840,000 KRW.
According to economic media CNBC on the 13th (local time), Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun introduced the 5G flagship models at a launch event held at the Beijing headquarters. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the event was broadcast live online without media or related personnel attendance. Xiaomi will release the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro in China on the 14th and 18th respectively. The prices were set at 3,999 yuan (approximately 677,000 KRW) and 4,999 yuan (approximately 846,000 KRW), respectively.
The newly released models are equipped with a 6.67-inch high-definition display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, and a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera. In particular, the camera is the same as that revealed by Samsung Electronics at the Unpacked event for the S20 Ultra.
Xiaomi plans to release about 10 5G models this year. Following China, Xiaomi intends to introduce the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro in markets such as India, where it has effectively dominated. A Xiaomi official stated, "We will focus on Western Europe for the next few years."
CNBC reported that Xiaomi is concentrating on reversing the declining sales trend in China through the launch of this flagship 5G model. Last year, Xiaomi's shipments in the Chinese smartphone market decreased by more than 20% compared to the previous year. Considering the overall contraction of the Chinese market, this is a significant decline. Market research firm IDC advised Xiaomi that "consumers are waiting for more affordable 5G devices."

Initially, there were expectations that Xiaomi's launch event would be canceled due to the impact of COVID-19, which claimed over 1,000 lives. CNBC added that despite ongoing concerns about COVID-19, the launch plan proceeded as scheduled at the Beijing headquarters, although some factories have not yet fully resumed production.
