COVID-19 Cases and Deaths Surge... Hubei Province Reports 10 Times More New Confirmed Cases (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths in Hubei Province, China, surged significantly within a single day.
On the 13th, the Hubei Provincial Health Commission (Weiguanwei) announced that as of midnight, 14,840 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in Hubei Province. Among them, 13,436 new confirmed cases were reported in Wuhan City, the epicenter of the outbreak. The number of new deaths in one day rose to 242, with 216 of those deaths occurring in Wuhan City.
The increase in new confirmed cases and deaths is due to the addition of 13,332 clinically diagnosed confirmed cases and 135 deaths, which were not previously included in the confirmed case statistics but are estimated to be almost certainly infected.
The number of new deaths in one day increased about 2.5 times compared to the previous day's 94, and the number of confirmed cases increased nearly 10 times compared to the previous day's 1,638.
According to cumulative statistics, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hubei Province reached 48,206. Among them, 3,441 patients have recovered and been discharged, and 1,310 have died.
Currently, 33,693 confirmed patients are receiving treatment in isolation at hospitals, of which 5,647 are classified as severe cases and 1,437 as critically severe cases, so the death toll is expected to continue rising. The number of suspected cases is 9,028, and the number of close contacts is 158,377, of whom 77,308 are under medical observation.

With the sudden surge in confirmed cases and deaths in Hubei Province within a day, the nationwide cumulative confirmed cases and deaths have exceeded 59,000 and 1,300 respectively, two months after the COVID-19 outbreak. Previously, the National Health Commission, which announces nationwide statistics in China, reported on the 12th at midnight that the nationwide cumulative confirmed cases were 44,653 and deaths were 1,113.
