Gyeonggi-do Launches 'Intensive Crackdown' on 5,026 Environmental Pollutant Emission Facilities
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is launching a focused crackdown on businesses that emit environmental pollutants.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Environmental Management Office announced on the 13th that it will deploy 16 teams (39 members) from environmental inspection teams 1 to 7 to conduct year-round inspections of a total of 5,026 sites, starting with 931 locations this month, to improve the environment within the province by reducing emissions of pollutants such as fine dust and wastewater.
This crackdown is in accordance with the "2020 Integrated Guidance and Inspection Plan for Environmental Pollutant Emission Businesses."
The Provincial Environmental Management Office will conduct joint public-private inspections targeting all 5,026 pollutant-emitting businesses across seven regions within the province (Industrial Complex, Southern, Southwestern, Southeastern, Western, Northern, and Eastern areas).
The inspection targets by category include 1,235 sites emitting air pollutants, 1,365 sites discharging wastewater, and 2,426 sites emitting both air pollutants and wastewater.
The main inspection items are ▲ unauthorized installation and operation of air emission facilities ▲ abnormal operation such as malfunction or damage of air pollution prevention facilities ▲ high concentration fine dust emissions ▲ installation of unauthorized wastewater discharge pipes, among others.

Kang Jung-ho, head of the Provincial Environmental Management Office, emphasized, "As the need for environmental management of fine dust has recently increased, we will strongly enforce crackdowns on illegal environmental pollution activities, focusing on industrial complexes densely populated with pollutant-emitting businesses and sites with frequent complaints, to provide residents with a pleasant living environment."
