Jeong Byeong-seon, Vice Minister of Science and ICT, Visits KSTAR Research Site
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Junho] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that Jeong Byeong-seon, the 1st Vice Minister, visited the National Fusion Research Institute on the afternoon of the 7th to check the progress of research on KSTAR, a superconducting tokamak fusion research device.
On the same day, Vice Minister Jeong presided over the 16th Fusion Working Committee, which included experts from industry, academia, and research as well as related government ministries, discussing current issues such as device development and technical cooperation related to Korea's participation in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, the 2020 tasks for fusion energy development, and future development directions.
Vice Minister Jeong stated, "Through Korea's participation in ITER, domestic industries have secured procurement items worth over 600 billion KRW from the ITER organization and other participating countries," adding, "The number of Korean personnel working at the ITER organization is also increasing, strengthening core fusion technologies and future professional workforce capabilities."

He continued, "Although there are many long-term challenges to realize fusion energy, we will proactively promote technology development and workforce training to ensure Korea maintains global competitiveness."
