Jeong Dong-yeong Proposes Three Principles for Opposition Unity: "Must Apologize to Honam and Pledge to Prevent Division"
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Jeong Dong-young, leader of the Democratic Peace Party, stated that the political factionalization ended with former lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo's departure from the Bareunmirae Party and presented the 'Three Principles of Integration.' Jeong set conditions including a sincere apology to the Honam public sentiment and agreement on a decentralized presidential system.
On the morning of the 30th at the National Assembly's Supreme Council meeting, Jeong said, "As of yesterday, the long and tedious political factionalization has ended," adding, "We have now entered the stage of integration to create a new political order." He emphasized, "First, we must end the fragmented opposition division and make efforts toward integration."
Jeong presented the three principles of integration, stating, "The public will not be moved by simple mergers and splits. Clear principles, values, and justifications are necessary," which include ▲ reflection on division ▲ identity as a reform opposition party ▲ completion of a decentralized constitutional amendment and a mixed-member proportional representation system.
Jeong said, "It is of utmost importance to reflect until the anger of the Honam public sentiment and the people is resolved over the disbandment and division of the party created by the people to overcome the two-party system," adding, "A sincere apology and a pledge to prevent division must be made before the Honam public sentiment and the people." He continued, "We must create a reform opposition party with a clear identity, not pseudo-reform, and have a clear goal for what we aim to achieve by uniting." He also stressed, "Agreement on goals such as a decentralized presidential system and a mixed-member proportional representation system is absolutely necessary."
