Australian Researchers Successfully Replicate Novel Coronavirus... Could It Lead to Vaccine Development?
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] A research institute in Australia announced that it has succeeded in replicating the novel coronavirus in the laboratory, raising expectations that this will pave the way for vaccine development. With the ability to replicate virus samples, it is expected that antibodies capable of detecting infected individuals who have not yet shown symptoms can be developed.
According to foreign media such as CNN, on the 29th, researchers at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity at the University of Melbourne in Australia announced that they successfully replicated and cultured the novel coronavirus extracted from infected patients. The researchers stated that they will share the cultured virus samples with the World Health Organization (WHO) and research institutes worldwide. This successful replication is expected to be an important milestone for virus vaccine development. Although there were previous reports that a research institute in China succeeded in replicating the novel coronavirus, that institute did not disclose the samples themselves or share them with the WHO.
Dr. Julian Druce, head of the virus identification laboratory at the Doherty Institute, described this research as a "significant breakthrough," explaining that "we now have the capability to verify and compare the virus's specificity through all verifiable tests." With this successful virus replication, it is also expected that antibody development capable of identifying infected individuals in the incubation period without symptoms will become possible.
