Nowon-gu Expands Coverage of 'Resident Safety Insurance'
Added Coverage for Sexual Violence Crime Victims, Violent Crime Injuries, and Gas Accident Deaths (Sequelae)... Insurance Period from February 1 to January 31, 2021
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced on the 28th that it will expand the coverage of the ‘Resident Safety Insurance’ introduced in July last year.
The ‘Resident Safety Insurance’ was introduced to provide financial and mental stability to Nowon-gu residents when they experience various disasters and accidents, alleviating the anxiety felt in daily life and actively protecting affected residents.
The coverage applies to those registered as residents or foreign registrants in Nowon-gu, and insurance benefits can be received regardless of the accident location. Enrollment is automatic without a separate registration process, and it is automatically canceled upon moving to another area.
Compared to last year, the changes include the scope and content of coverage. Compensation of 5 million KRW each has been added for victims of sexual violence crimes and violent crime injuries, and 10 million KRW each for death and aftereffects caused by gas accidents, which can lead to major accidents.
Additionally, ▲ death from natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, and earthquakes (including heatstroke and sunstroke) ▲ death and injury with aftereffects from explosions, fires, and collapses ▲ death and injury with aftereffects while using public transportation ▲ treatment costs for injuries from school zone traffic accidents ▲ compensation for injuries of persons of merit are maintained at a maximum of 10 million KRW per resident, unchanged from before.
Hit-and-run and uninsured vehicle injury death and aftereffects, which are supported by national guarantee projects, and robbery injury death and aftereffects with limited coverage, have been excluded from the coverage details.
It is possible to receive overlapping compensation with existing personal insurance, and the insurance beneficiary is the Nowon-gu resident themselves. In case of death, the insurance payment is made to the legal heirs, excluding those under 15 years old according to Article 732 of the Commercial Act.
The insurance period is one year, from February 1 to January 31, 2021. If an insurance claim arises, the insurance money must be claimed within three years from the date of the accident at the Korea Local Finance Association (☎02-6900-2200), and the insurance terms can be checked on the district’s website.
Since 2015, the district has also enrolled all residents annually in bicycle insurance to prepare for the increasing number of bicycle accidents. Like the Resident Safety Insurance, residents registered in Nowon-gu are automatically enrolled without a separate registration process. Until last year, insurance payments totaling 1.06 billion KRW were made to 1,480 residents who suffered bicycle accidents.
