Uncertainty Surrounds Resumption of Former Chairman Gon's Trial
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jaehee] NHK reported on the 16th that lawyers Hironaka Junichiro and Takano Takashi, who were representing Carlos Gon, former Nissan chairman who fled to Lebanon, have resigned.
According to the report, lawyers Hironaka and Takano resigned from representing former Chairman Gon, and going forward, three lawyers including Kawazu Hiroshi will take over the defense.
Former Chairman Gon, who was once praised as a manager who revived Nissan from becoming a failing company, was indicted on charges including voluntarily underreporting his compensation in securities reports and illegally spending Nissan funds, constituting special breach of trust. Last month, Gon fled to Lebanon without informing his defense team.
On this day, the Tokyo District Court held a procedure to organize the issues of the trial for the first time since Gon's escape. Lawyer Kawazu stated regarding the prospects of Gon's return raised that "At this point, it is judged that the possibility of former Chairman Gon voluntarily returning is none." Accordingly, NHK reported that the resumption of the trial for former Chairman Gon, who fled to Lebanon, appears uncertain.
