[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Apple will release an iPhone supporting 5G this year. Apple, which is one step behind Samsung that already launched a 5G smartphone last year, has been preparing the 5G iPhone since a dramatic agreement with Qualcomm last year. From the second half of this year, it is expected that the iPhone will be usable on 5G networks in some countries including South Korea.
On the 14th (local time), Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple specialist analyst, announced that Apple will release the 'iPhone 12' series in the second half of 2020, supporting frequencies below 6GHz and the ultra-high frequency (mmWave) band using ultra-fast short-range networks. This claim differs from Medhi Hosseini, a Susquehanna analyst, who previously analyzed that Apple would first release a model supporting only frequencies below 6GHz and separately release an iPhone supporting the ultra-high frequency band at the end of the year.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 12 series in September and launch it in the global market by the end of the third quarter or early fourth quarter. In South Korea, the iPhone 12 is known to be released in November. Apple is likely to sell 5G iPhones in five countries including the United States, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan, where 5G networks are established, and release 4G models in other countries.
There is also speculation that only the iPhone 12 Pro model will be released with 5G, or that all four iPhone 12 series models will be released separately as 4G and 5G versions. Samsung Electronics released four products for 5G: Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note10+, Galaxy Fold, and Galaxy A90, selling more than 6.7 million units last year alone. Apple, which was involved in a patent dispute with Qualcomm, barely reached an agreement in April last year, but this caused Apple to respond late to the 5G market. Apple is expected to tighten its sales by releasing a 5G-supported iPhone this year.
IT specialized media Nine to Five Mac stated, "The iPhone 12 will apply a rear camera that detects depth in 3D, and the exterior design may feature a slab design reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and 5," adding, "The investment industry expects Apple to increase iPhone shipments by 10% and sell more than 100 million iPhones this year."
