[Breaking] President Moon: "Momentum for Constitutional Amendment Lies with the National Assembly... Public Consent to Be Considered if Pursued"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] President Moon Jae-in said, "It is difficult in the current National Assembly, but if constitutional amendment is supported through pledges during the general election in the next National Assembly, then the constitutional amendment can be promoted in the following National Assembly."
On the 14th, President Moon held a New Year's press conference at the Blue House State Guest House under the theme "Certain Change, Republic of Korea 2020," stating, "The constitutional amendment contained the philosophy of myself and our government to fundamentally change the political structure and society," and added, "I thought that amending the constitution together during the local elections was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but it was regrettably canceled."
President Moon also said, "The president will review whether the content can be agreed upon by the people and then decide on a position," adding, "If that happens, I think it will be difficult for the president to have the driving force to promote the constitutional amendment again."

This is President Moon's third New Year's press conference. Unlike previous years, since he delivered a New Year's address on the 7th, the conference proceeded in a Q&A format after a brief opening remark of about three minutes without a separate New Year's address. The Q&A with reporters was divided into three topics: politics and society, livelihood and economy, and diplomacy and security, without pre-selecting questioners.
