Government Accelerates Decentralization Efforts... Minister Jinyoung Holds New Year Meeting with Heads of Four Local Councils

View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Osangdo] Jin Young, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, will hold a New Year's meeting with the heads of the four major local government councils at the Government Seoul Office on the 14th.
Attending the meeting are Kwon Young-jin, Chairman of the Korea Association of Mayors and Governors (Mayor of Daegu Metropolitan City), Shin Won-chul, Chairman of the National Council of Chairpersons of City and Provincial Councils (Chairman of Seoul City Council), Yeom Tae-young, Chairman of the National Association of Mayors, County Governors, and District Heads (Mayor of Suwon), Kang Pil-gu, Chairman of the National Council of Chairpersons of City, County, and Autonomous District Councils (Chairman of Yeonggwang County Council), and Kim Soon-eun, Chairperson of the Autonomy and Decentralization Committee. The meeting will share the achievements of local autonomy and fiscal decentralization efforts so far and discuss future plans for the full revision of the Local Autonomy Act.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety explained that this meeting is an occasion to reaffirm commitment to accelerating the promotion of local autonomy and fiscal decentralization.
The government has submitted the 'Local Transfer Comprehensive Act,' which transfers 46 laws and 400 administrative tasks under the jurisdiction of ministries to local governments, to the National Assembly. This bill passed the National Assembly on the 9th and is scheduled to be implemented in January 2021 after a one-year preparation period.

Minister Jin Young of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety said, "In the new year, we will closely cooperate with the four major local government councils and the Autonomy and Decentralization Committee to create a Korea where everyone prospers through decentralization," adding, "We will do our best to produce results that allow residents to feel real changes and enable local communities to regain vitality."
