Alternative New Party Founded Advocating 'Third Zone Integration'... Choi Kyung-hwan Appointed as Leader
Choi Kyung-hwan "From this moment, we will initiate Third Zone integration... Let's unite the Bareunmirae, Peace Party, and Independents"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] The Alternative New Party was founded on the 12th, pledging to reform the dominant two-party politics and to unify the 'third zone.'
The Alternative New Party officially launched by holding a central party founding convention at the National Assembly Members' Office Building in the afternoon. It has been about five months since leaving the Party for Democracy and Peace in August last year. Representative Choi Kyunghwan (first-term, Gwangju Buk-gu Eul) was appointed as the party leader.
Seven incumbent lawmakers participated as founding promoters: Yoo Seongyeop, Park Jiwon, Cheon Jeongbae, Choi Kyunghwan, Jang Byeongwan, Kim Jonghoe, and Yoon Youngil. All of them represent constituencies in the Honam region. Jang Jeongsuk, a member of the Bareunmirae Party but active in the Alternative New Party, also joined.
Through the founding resolution, the Alternative New Party stated, "We must end the symbiotic system of the old political groups that occupy 80% of current politics and realize a multi-party consensus democracy. We hold the ruling party, which rejected reform coalitions early in its administration and missed precious opportunities for political and national reform, and the first opposition party, which has fallen into public criticism due to unconditional obstruction, accountable, and we will innovate the politics they have ruined."
It continued, "We will definitely win the April 15 general election. We will establish a strong political competition system and bring a fresh breeze to Korean politics," expressing its determination.
Representative Choi Kyunghwan was appointed as the party leader. In his acceptance speech, the new leader Choi emphasized, "The Alternative New Party will be an alternative to the fight between the Democratic Party and the Liberty Korea Party. We will lead cooperation and solidarity to recreate a progressive government and present alternatives."
He particularly said, "The reason for appointing me, a first-term lawmaker, is to have the Alternative New Party relinquish all vested interests and create a genuine third force to win the general election. Based on this power, it means to play a leading role in recreating a progressive reform government." He declared, "From this moment, the Alternative New Party will embark on unifying the third force."
