'Korean Tour Grand Prize' Mungyeongjun "Warming up in Hong Kong~"
Ahead of European Debut, Fine-Tuning Shot Sensitivity on Asian Tour, 'The Open Champ' Lauri Set to Compete
[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] Moon Kyung-jun (38), the 'Korean Tour Player of the Year,' has started warming up on the Asian (APGA) Tour.
He has entered the Hong Kong Open (total prize money of $1 million), held on the 9th at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, Hong Kong (par 72, 6,710 yards). This tournament is the stage co-hosted annually in November by the European Tour. However, last year it was indefinitely postponed due to escalating anti-government protests in Hong Kong and safety concerns, eventually crossing into the next year. This time, the European Tour is holding the South African Open during the same period, so the APGA Tour will proceed alone.
Moon Kyung-jun is a late bloomer who played tennis until his first year of university and switched to golf from his second year. He debuted on the Korean Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA) Korean Tour in 2007, won his first title at the 2015 Maekyung Open, and last year earned the honor of his first-ever Player of the Year award without a win. He relied on consistency, making the cut in all 15 tournaments. Including a tie for 2nd place at the Genesis Open, he accumulated points with seven top-10 finishes.
He achieved a grand slam of four awards: the Deokchun Award for lowest score, the Happy Together Award chosen by players' votes for communication, and the Best Player Trophy from the Korean Golf Journalists Association. The Player of the Year winner also secures a European Tour card for the 2020 season. This is why Moon Kyung-jun fine-tuned his competitive shot form early at last month's APGA Tour BNI Indonesian Masters (39th place) and Thailand Masters (12th place). He will attempt to break into the European stage at the Saudi International at the end of this month.
"This year, I plan to participate in the Korean Tour, European Tour, and APGA Tour all at once," said Moon Kyung-jun. "It's a challenging schedule, but I will work hard to achieve my goals step by step." The participation of Shane Lowry (Ireland), ranked 19th in the world, is a hot topic locally. He is a player who won the European Tour Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January last year and became a major champion by winning the oldest major, The Open, in July.
