Gyeonggi-do to Introduce 20 'Wildfire Suppression Helicopters' with 8 Billion Won Investment
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will invest 8 billion KRW this year to lease and operate 20 wildfire suppression helicopters to protect the lives and property of residents from wildfires.
This accounts for 30% of the total 66 wildfire suppression helicopters operated by local governments nationwide.
The province's active move to lease wildfire suppression helicopters is closely related to the recent number of wildfire occurrences. Last year, there were 172 wildfire incidents in the province, accounting for 26% of the national total. However, through rapid initial response using wildfire suppression helicopters, the damage area was limited to 41 hectares, which is only 1% of the nationwide wildfire damage area (3,255 hectares) during the same period.
This year, the province plans to operate a "Golden Time System" by distributing 20 wildfire suppression helicopters across 20 cities and counties, including Seongnam City, aiming to arrive at wildfire sites within 30 minutes of occurrence.
In particular, helicopters will be concentrated and operated during the spring and autumn seasons when wildfires frequently occur. Using the "Wildfire Site Video Transmission System," wildfire situations will be shared in real time with related organizations to coordinate responses, maintaining a cooperative firefighting system with the Korea Forest Service, fire stations, and others.
Additionally, for rapid response, a "super-regional cooperation system" will be established with Seoul and other cities.

Shin Gwang-seon, Director of the Provincial Forestry Department, stated, "The metropolitan area is home to 25 million people, so in the event of wildfire expansion, there is concern about greater human and property damage compared to other regions. We will protect the beautiful nature and the lives of residents through rapid response using wildfire suppression helicopters."
