View original image[Asia Economy Kim Hyun-jun, Golf Specialist Reporter] Justin Thomas (USA), ranked 4th in the world, added another trophy in Hawaii.
On the 6th (Korean time), at the Kapalua Resort Plantation Golf Course (Par 73, 7,518 yards) on Maui Island, Hawaii, the final day of the PGA Tour Sentry Tournament (total prize money $6.7 million), Thomas shot 4 strokes under par to tie with Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele (both USA) at 14 under par 278. He then sealed the victory with a winning birdie on the third hole of the playoff at the 18th hole (Par 5). This marks his second win of the season and 12th career victory, with a winner's prize of $1.34 million (1.567 billion KRW).
Thomas recorded 7 birdies and 3 bogeys. It was rather unfortunate that his second shot on the final 18th hole, where he led by one stroke, flew into the hazard area resulting in a bogey. Schauffele succeeded in reaching the green in two shots but only managed a three-putt par, which was a small relief. Reed surged with a 7-under-par round, posting the daily best score to join the playoff. Schauffele was eliminated after parring the first playoff hole, and Reed was eliminated after parring the third playoff hole.
It is interesting that Thomas is particularly strong in Hawaii. Following his win at this tournament in 2017, he swept back-to-back victories including the Sony Open. This was the first time in 14 years since Ernie Els (South Africa, 2003) achieved this feat. At the Sony Open back then, Thomas drew even more spotlight by shooting a 'magical 59' on the first day and setting the lowest 72-hole score (27 under par 253). He is also well known to domestic fans as the inaugural champion of The CJ Cup in 2018. He reclaimed the title last October after two years.

In the 2019/2020 season, Thomas has already won twice in four tournaments, topping both the money list ($3.507 million) and the FedEx Cup points ranking (1,162 points), emerging as the 'eye of the storm.' Thomas will challenge for a consecutive second win at the Sony Open continuing on the 10th at the Waialae Golf Club in Honolulu. Patrick Cantlay (USA) is in 4th place (11 under par 182), and Korea's Kang Sung-hoon (33, CJ Logistics) is tied for 25th place (even par 292).
