[CES2020] Samsung Electronics, 2020 Model 'QLED 8K'... Surpassing the Limits of TV
[Asia Economy Reporter Sohyeon Park] Samsung Electronics will unveil its 2020 model 'QLED 8K' TV at the world's largest electronics exhibition 'CES 2020,' held from January 7 to 10 (local time) in Las Vegas, USA.
The 2020 QLED 8K offers a next-level 8K experience through innovations across the entire product, from picture quality and sound to smart features, powered by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
Additionally, it introduces a new standard for TV screens by applying the bezel-less 'Infinity' design.
More Perfect Picture Quality... Deep Learning Applied 'AI Quantum Processor'
Samsung Electronics equipped the 2020 QLED 8K with the 'AI Quantum Processor,' which combines machine learning and deep learning methods.
With the application of deep learning, the upscaling function that converts any source video quality to 8K-level high resolution is significantly enhanced, expressing complex contours and textures more delicately than before, thereby improving picture quality completeness.
The new AI Quantum Processor operates based on a neural network model and generates optimal algorithms by itself from the learned database, enabling optimal upscaling regardless of the input video.
The 2020 QLED 8K newly applies the 'Adaptive Picture' feature, providing optimized brightness and contrast in any viewing environment.
Since the TV recognizes the surrounding environment and automatically adjusts screen brightness, consumers do not need to draw curtains or turn off lights even in places with strong sunlight.
Samsung Electronics also incorporated 'AI ScaleNet' technology, which reduces original data loss during video streaming. This technology is planned to be applied to videos in the 'Amazon Prime Video' app through collaboration with Amazon.
Moreover, the 2020 QLED 8K TV will allow streaming of YouTube's 8K AV1 codec videos.
AI-Based Sound Innovation... Richer Surround Sound Implementation
One of the biggest features of the 2020 QLED 8K is the significantly enhanced functions to deliver rich sound.
'OTS+ (Object Tracking Sound Plus)' is a technology that recognizes moving objects in the video and makes the sound follow the TV's built-in speakers accordingly.
This technology enables 5.1 channel surround sound with just the TV, allowing viewers to immerse themselves as if they were on-site during dynamic scenes such as a car speeding by.
Samsung Electronics also introduces the new 'Q-Symphony' feature, which finds the optimal sound by utilizing both the TV and soundbar speakers when connected together.
This feature received the CES Innovation Award and delivers high-quality 9.1.4 channel sound that fills the entire home more richly.
Additionally, the 'AVA (Active Voice Amplifier)' function is equipped, allowing the TV to recognize surrounding noise and adjust the volume of the speaker's voice in the video. This feature ensures consumers do not miss drama dialogues even in noisy environments.
Setting the Standard for Premium Screens... Applying 'Infinity' Design
The 2020 QLED 8K features the bezel-less Infinity design, utilizing up to 99% of the screen for outstanding immersion and elegant design.
It also presents a new standard for premium screens by combining the Infinity design with a 15mm ultra-slim profile and a completely flat back surface.
Innovation in User Experience Based on AI and Connectivity
Samsung Electronics redesigned the user interface of the 'Universal Guide,' which helps consumers easily find desired content, focusing on content-centric design.
In particular, it recommends streaming content from various apps at a glance, making it easier to select desired content.
Also, 'TV Plus,' which is free for all Samsung Smart TV users, plans to offer over 120 global channels across news, movies, and other categories within the year.
The 'Multi View' feature, allowing consumers to multitask while watching TV, is also included. Users can watch two pieces of content simultaneously in their preferred format, from 'Side by Side' to 'Picture-in-Picture.'
One noticeable improvement in this year's new model is easier connectivity between the TV and other devices.
The newly applied 'Tap View' feature enables instant mirroring by simply touching a smartphone to the TV.
Additionally, the 'Digital Butler' feature has been introduced, allowing the TV to recognize and control not only devices connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth but also older devices not connected to the internet.
The 2020 QLED 8K has expanded voice recognition services. Besides Samsung Bixby, optimized for TV control and content experience, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are also integrated to enhance consumer convenience.
Reflecting recent trends toward a healthy lifestyle, the 'Samsung Health' app is now available on Samsung Smart TVs.
Users can easily manage their existing workout records from their smartphones on the TV and access dedicated fitness content.
