Winter 'Hiking Advisory'... Over Half of Missing Person Incidents Occur in January
Ministry of the Interior and Safety Urges Caution for Hiking Accident Emergencies
[Asia Economy Reporter Osangdo] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety urged caution regarding mountain climbing accidents on the 2nd as the new year begins. This is because injuries, deaths, and disappearances sharply increase during mountain hikes taken to make new resolutions.
According to the Ministry, 2,364 mountain climbing accidents occurred during the winter seasons of 2017-2018, resulting in 1,650 injuries, 35 deaths, and 31 missing persons. Notably, more than half of the winter disappearances, 16 cases, happened in January.
In January alone, there were 860 mountain climbing accidents (36%), with 637 casualties (37%).
Accidents occurred 48% of the time on nearby hills rather than on relatively well-maintained trails in national, provincial, or military parks.
