Increase in 'Eomjijok' Leads to Record High Online Shopping Transactions of 12.7 Trillion Won in November Last Year
Mobile Shopping Transaction Volume Hits Record High... Food Service Transactions Surpass 1 Trillion Won for the First Time
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] In November of last year, online shopping transaction volume reached an all-time high, and mobile shopping transaction volume also set a record high. This was due to a significant increase in thumb users, driven by the diversification of food services and the development of delivery services. As the use of delivery service applications such as Baedal Minjok increased, the online shopping transaction volume for food services surpassed 1 trillion won for the first time ever.
According to the "November 2019 Online Shopping Trends" released by Statistics Korea on the 2nd, online shopping transaction volume in November last year recorded 12.7576 trillion won, a 20.2% increase compared to the same month the previous year, marking the highest ever. Among online shopping transactions, mobile shopping recorded 8.4063 trillion won, a 28.1% increase, also setting a new record. Compared to the previous month, online shopping transaction volume increased by 8.0%, and mobile shopping transaction volume increased by 9.1%. The proportion of mobile shopping transaction volume within online shopping transactions rose by 4.0 percentage points to 65.9%, compared to 61.9% in the same month the previous year.
By product category, online shopping transaction volume decreased in others (-16.0%) compared to the same month last year, but increased in services (35.9%), food (26.5%), and fashion (16.7%).

By detailed product group, online shopping transaction volume decreased in others (-16.0%) compared to the same month last year, but increased in food services (100.3%), cosmetics (32.0%), and food and beverages (28.4%). In particular, online transactions through applications such as Baedal Minjok surged explosively, pushing the online shopping transaction volume for food services beyond 1 trillion won for the first time ever. This is the first time since the related statistics began to be compiled in January 2017 that food service transaction volume has exceeded 1 trillion won.
