People Power Party to Elect New Party Leader and Supreme Council Members Today
Attention is focused on how many pro-impeachment candidates will be elected to the Supreme Council.
Party Convention Divided Between Anti-Impeachment and Pro-Impeachment Factions... Begins at 2 p.m. at Osco in Cheongju
The People Power Party will hold its party convention on August 22 to elect a new leadership. As there are expectations that Kim Moonsoo and Jang Donghyuk, both anti-impeachment (Bantan) candidates, will advance to the runoff for party leader, the main point of interest is how many pro-impeachment (Chantan) candidates will be included in the Supreme Council.
The People Power Party will hold its 6th party convention at Osco in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, at 2 p.m. on this day. At this convention, the party will elect one new party leader, four Supreme Council members, and one Youth Supreme Council member. Winners will be determined by combining the party member electoral college vote (80%) and a public opinion poll (20%). In the mobile and automated response (ARS) voting for party members conducted over two days from August 20, 334,272 out of 753,076 eligible voters participated, resulting in a turnout of 44.39%.

원본보기 아이콘If No Candidate Wins a Majority in the Leadership Election, Runoff to Be Held on the 26th
Attention is focused on whether any of the four candidates for party leader-Kim Moonsoo, Ahn Cheolsoo, Jang Donghyuk, and Cho Kyungtae (listed in Korean alphabetical order)-will secure a majority. If no candidate wins a majority, a runoff will be held between the top two candidates on the 26th to determine the final winner. Although Kim Moonsoo, the People Power Party's candidate in the June 3 presidential election, has shown a lead in approval ratings, it remains uncertain whether he will secure a majority in the end. Many analysts predict that Jang Donghyuk, who is supported by the pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Sukyeol) faction and far-right YouTuber Jeon Hangil, will advance to the runoff as one of the top two candidates.
Pro-impeachment (Chantan) candidates Ahn Cheolsoo and Cho Kyungtae appear to be losing support among party members. Despite calling for party reform and personnel overhaul as part of a "conservative innovation" agenda, recent events such as a special prosecutor's search and seizure at party headquarters have further shifted party sentiment toward anti-impeachment candidates. At one point, there was talk of Ahn and Cho uniting as "innovation candidates," but this fell through when Ahn refused. Ahn stated, "The characteristic of my campaigns is that I always receive 5-10% more than what the polls suggest," expressing confidence in making it to the runoff.

Among the eight Supreme Council candidates-Geunsik Kim, Minsu Kim, Taewoo Kim, Jaewon Kim, Beomgyu Son, Dongwook Shin, Hyangja Yang, and Sujin Choi (listed in Korean alphabetical order)-four will be elected. Shin Dongwook, an incumbent lawmaker; Geunsik Kim, considered part of the pro-Han Donghoon faction; Minsu Kim, who enjoys strong support from hardline conservatives; and Jaewon Kim, who served as chief secretary during Kim Moonsoo's presidential campaign, are seen as strong contenders.
For the Supreme Council seat reserved for women, Sujin Choi, who recently served as party spokesperson, enjoys the advantage of being an incumbent lawmaker, but it is considered difficult for her to defeat Hyangja Yang, who has high name recognition due to multiple election campaigns, including the presidential race. For Youth Supreme Council, Woo Jaejun and Son Sujo are competing after uniting their candidacies. While Woo has the advantage of being an incumbent lawmaker, it is difficult to guarantee his victory over Son, who is known as a "Park Geunhye Kid" and "Moon Jaein's rival."

원본보기 아이콘Among the Supreme Council candidates, Geunsik Kim, Hyangja Yang, and Woo Jaejun are pro-impeachment (Chantan) candidates. With anti-impeachment candidates likely to secure the party leader position, the key point of interest is how many pro-impeachment figures will be included in the leadership. According to the People Power Party's constitution and regulations, if four out of the five elected Supreme Council members resign, the party shifts to an emergency response committee system. Therefore, the number of pro-impeachment candidates elected could play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of the People Power Party.
