Robot vacuums have become an essential home appliance for busy modern people. They autonomously clean dust around the house, and many now offer mopping functions as well, making them a key item in the 'smart home.' However, did you know that reports of issues with robot vacuums have recently surged?

According to the Korea Consumer Agency, the number of complaints related to robot vacuums has steadily increased over the past three years. Last year, 105 cases were reported, a 90.9% increase compared to the previous year. In the first half of 2024 alone, 77 cases were reported, nearly double the number from the same period the previous year.

Product defects accounted for 74.5% of consumer complaints. Among these, sensor malfunctions were the most common, making up 24.9% of cases. These issues included mapping errors, failure to recognize obstacles, and inability to return to the charging station. Other frequent problems included failure to operate or sudden stops (17.8%), and malfunctions in automatic water supply or dustbin emptying features (17.2%). For models with mopping functions, 10.7% of cases involved water leakage from the robot vacuum.

In terms of transaction-related complaints, the most common issues were refusal to accept returns (such as when the box was opened or high return shipping fees for overseas purchases), as well as delayed or undelivered shipments.

Only Half of Product Defect Cases Receive Compensation

While 84.1% of transaction-related issues were resolved through refunds or exchanges, only about half (56.5%) of product defect cases received compensation. Disagreements between manufacturers and consumers over whether the issue was a 'product defect' or 'user error' often made it difficult to reach a settlement.

How to Prevent Robot Vacuum Issues

An official from the Korea Consumer Agency advised, "To prevent issues with robot vacuums, choose a model that matches your home's layout, and be sure to remove any obstacles or food waste from the floor before cleaning." The official also emphasized, "In addition, pay close attention to product maintenance, such as removing dust from sensors to prevent malfunctions."
