The distinctive body odor that develops with age,
commonly referred to as "old person smell,"
does not completely disappear even with daily washing.
Experts explain that this unpleasant odor, which becomes stronger as you get older,
cannot simply be seen as a hygiene issue.
They say that the cause originates not on the skin's surface, but from within the body.
The true cause of the odor is 'lipid oxidation'

explains that this body odor is caused by a compound called '2-nonenal',
which forms when lipids (oily substances) on the skin's surface oxidize.
As aging progresses, the skin's antioxidant capacity decreases,
which causes the odor to become stronger and linger longer.
Kenny compares this process to "the body rusting."

Trying to mask it with perfume can actually make the smell more unpleasant.
For this reason, rather than simply hiding it from the outside,
Kenny advises that you need to address it from within your body.
An unexpected solution: 'mushrooms'
Mushrooms are rich in
'ergothioneine,' a powerful antioxidant amino acid.
This compound helps prevent the oxidation of skin lipids,
which can help reduce the distinctive body odor that comes with aging.
In addition, ergothioneine has excellent anti-inflammatory properties,
and some studies have shown that people who frequently consume mushrooms
have about half the risk of cognitive impairment.
Which mushrooms are the most effective?
Kenny says that all mushrooms can be helpful,
but shiitake mushrooms and oyster mushrooms are especially effective sources of nutrients.
She emphasizes that, especially before and after menopause,
consciously consuming these antioxidant compounds is even more important for preventing and improving body odor.
