Despite Impeachment Crisis, Party Approval Ratings: Ruling Party 38% vs Opposition 36%
Even amid the current president's impeachment crisis, the ruling People Power Party was found to lead the opposition Democratic Party of Korea in approval ratings within the margin of error. Public opinion in favor of removing President Yoon Suk Yeol through impeachment has slightly decreased.
According to the National Barometer Survey (NBS) conducted by Embrain Public, KSTAT Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research (from the 20th to the 22nd, with 1,000 men and women aged 18 or older nationwide, conducted via mobile phone interviews, margin of error ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, response rate 22.2%), the People Power Party's approval rating rose by 3 percentage points to 38%. The Democratic Party's approval rating also rose by 3 percentage points to 36%, trailing the People Power Party by 2 percentage points.
In the third week of December, the Democratic Party led the People Power Party by 13 percentage points at 39%, but since then, the gap has narrowed to within the margin of error.
Regarding suitability for the next presidential candidate, Democratic Party leader Lee Jaemyung ranked first with 28%. Among the ruling bloc, Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moonsoo ranked second with 14%. He was followed by Daegu Mayor Hong Junpyo (7%), Seoul Mayor Oh Sehoon (6%), and former People Power Party leader Han Donghoon (6%).
On the nature of the next presidential election, 49% of respondents said there should be a change of government, while 41% said the current government should be re-elected.
Regarding President Yoon's impeachment, 57% of respondents said he should be removed from office through impeachment, while 38% said the impeachment should be dismissed and he should return to his duties. Compared to last week's survey, the percentage favoring removal decreased by 2 percentage points, while those favoring his return increased by 2 percentage points.
Regarding President Yoon's response to the impeachment trial, 33% viewed it positively, while 59% viewed it negatively. Regarding President Yoon's arrest, 57% said it was the right decision, while 39% said it was the wrong decision.
