More Business Owners and Part-Timers Seek Short-Term Jobs During Long Lunar New Year Holiday

This year, the demand for part-time jobs during the Lunar New Year holiday has surged. Many small business owners are looking for short-term part-timers to cover the shortage of workers during the extended holiday period, while more part-timers are choosing to work instead of visiting their hometowns for the holiday. Part-time job platforms are enjoying a boom in "Lunar New Year holiday workforce" demand.

On the 22nd, local community platform Danggeun announced that 27% of the short-term job postings uploaded to its job platform "Danggeun Alba" in the past week were seeking workers specifically for the Lunar New Year holiday period. Job postings such as "Hiring short-term part-timers for the Lunar New Year holiday" and "Looking for Lunar New Year part-timers from January 25 to 30" are being uploaded rapidly. Especially in the food and retail industries, there is a rush to hire part-timers due to the holiday demand. Danggeun analyzed that many employers are looking for extra staff to prepare for the expected surge in customers during the holiday, or seeking replacements for existing staff who will be absent. In particular, job postings for tasks like packing fruit gift sets and selling gift sets in department stores have been continuously posted starting one to two weeks before the holiday.

Unusual holiday jobs are also drawing attention, such as "jeon-making part-timer" and "hangwa-making part-timer." Many businesses that produce essential foods for the ancestral rites table are hiring short-term workers exclusively for the Lunar New Year. Those who need to leave home for their hometown or travel during the holiday are also looking for pet-sitting jobs.

Part-timers also prefer to earn extra money rather than rest during the holiday. According to a recent survey by Alba Cheonguk, a part-time job portal, 66.5% of 585 part-timers said they plan to work during the Lunar New Year holiday. Among those working in retail and sales, 78.4% said they would not take a break during the holiday, the highest rate among all sectors. In addition, the majority of part-timers in food and beverage (74.9%), service (74.4%), and driving/delivery (72.2%) industries also plan to work through the holiday.

Special Holiday Jobs Like Jeon-Making and Hangwa Gift Set Packing Also in Demand

There are also newcomers seeking short-term jobs for the holiday. Among Alba Cheonguk's individual members who are not currently working part-time, 270 people from teenagers to those over 50 said they plan to find a part-time job during the Lunar New Year holiday. Of these, 54.4% cited "earning pocket money" as their main reason. The average hourly wage desired by those seeking short-term Lunar New Year jobs was 12,591 won. Last year, a survey by Albamon showed that those planning to work short-term during the Lunar New Year expected to earn about 280,000 won for two days of work.

An industry official commented, "With Lunar New Year, the biggest holiday in Korea, approaching, short-term job recruitment is very active. Since hiring for more than 15 hours a week requires paying weekly holiday allowances and increases fixed costs, this type of short-term holiday work is expected to take up a larger share of the job market in the future."
