Easing Food Price Burdens... Government to Support Up to 50% Discounts on Pork Belly and Shoulder Butt Until End of May
Online and Offline Discount Events in April and May
The government has decided to support discounts on domestic pork products, including pork belly and shoulder butt, until the end of May in order to ease the burden of food prices caused by uncertainties related to the Middle East conflict.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on April 21 that, using funds from the Domestic Pork Producers Council, it will offer discounts of up to 50% on pork belly and shoulder butt from April 22 to the end of May at eight major supermarket chains and online malls nationwide.
First, at eight supermarket chains across the country, domestic pork belly and shoulder butt will be sold at discounts of more than 30%. In addition to the in-store promotions, online discounts will also be available. On the official online mall, Handon Mall, a 50% discount event on 2kg sets of pork belly and shoulder butt will be held from April 27 to May 15. Furthermore, in partnership with Naver, Gmarket, Auction, and Market Kurly, discounts of 20–40% will be offered on pork belly, shoulder butt, and front leg cuts from April 27 to May 31.
An official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs explained, "In April, wholesale pork prices have temporarily risen due to a combination of factors, including the peak pork consumption season after April, a decline in pig productivity, a decrease in the quantity of pork listed on the wholesale market, and a lower proportion of graded pork. However, the number of pigs slaughtered remains similar to last year, so there are no supply issues."
