View original imageOn April 27, BMW Korea announced that it currently has a total of 480 high-voltage technicians, the highest number in the industry. High-voltage technicians are professionals trained to maintain and repair electric vehicles, capable of handling the high-voltage systems of electrified powertrains. BMW Korea plans to increase this number to 650 by 2028.
BMW Korea nurtures high-voltage technicians by categorizing certification qualifications into stages according to skill levels. Candidates must complete basic theory and practical training on high-voltage systems and pass written and practical exams based on the standards of BMW headquarters in Germany. In addition, after completing an intensive three-day training program and passing the final test, they are awarded the 'High-voltage Technician Plus' qualification.
There is also the highest-level qualification, 'High-voltage Expert.' Only a select few who have obtained the High-voltage Technician Plus qualification and demonstrated outstanding skills are given the opportunity to pursue this path. They must complete an advanced five-week high-voltage expert training program and pass the most challenging certification exam based on the standards of BMW headquarters in Germany. Furthermore, in 2024, a certification course for electrified model transmission maintenance specialists was launched, and a total of 101 professionals have been trained to date.
BMW Korea became the fifth in the world, following the United States and the United Kingdom, to receive certification for independent operation of the high-voltage training system from BMW headquarters in Germany. The company continually updates its training and testing content to keep pace with high-voltage system advancements. Recently, BMW Korea introduced a new training program for the sixth-generation BMW high-voltage system, which is being applied for the first time in the New BMW iX3, and 170 high-voltage maintenance professionals are expected to complete this program in time for the model’s launch.
