This year’s Inventor King Gold Prize went to Byungcheon Park, Head of Cathode Material Technology, who secured key patents on LMR cell chemistry.
Park proactively established a patent barrier by focusing on the technological potential of the combination of LMR cathodes and silicon (Si) anodes. This technology is expected to serve as a core platform in the future commercialization of LMR batteries and has been recognized for securing a powerful, exclusive technology that is difficult for competitors to circumvent.
LMR batteries are a next-generation battery technology that increases the proportion of manganese to achieve price competitiveness while also realizing high energy density. LG Energy Solution is accelerating commercialization, recently launching a project for mass production of prismatic LMR batteries for GM’s next-generation electric trucks and large SUVs.
The Inventor King Silver Prize was awarded to: ▲ Core structure of 46 series cell-applied CAS (Inhyeok Jung, Principal Researcher) ▲ Electrode process quality control and tracking technology (Jaehwan Lee, Senior Researcher). The Bronze Prize went to: ▲ Electrolyte additive for improving high-temperature durability of LMR batteries (Jeongmin Lee, Principal Researcher) ▲ Cylindrical 46 series insulation structure (Minki Cho, Principal Researcher) ▲ Non-destructive cell lifespan status detection technology (Sunjung Choi, Principal Researcher).
The Patent Application King Gold Prize was awarded to Hyukgyun Jang, Senior Researcher, who filed numerous key patents in the fields of battery pack dual cooling and upper-lower venting. Jang was recognized for his contributions to multiple studies, including the development of pack design technologies that enhance battery safety such as heat transfer delay and gas/spark control structures.
Other recipients of the Patent Application King award include: ▲ Kwangmo Kim, Principal Researcher (Silver Prize) ▲ Hyunhee Lee, Principal Researcher (Silver Prize) ▲ Daechun Kim, Principal Researcher (Bronze Prize) ▲ Kilnam Ko, Principal Researcher (Bronze Prize) ▲ Suho Lee, Researcher (Bronze Prize).
LG Energy Solution selects and rewards the Inventor King and Patent Application King each year on Invention Day (May 19) to encourage a creative and challenging research and development culture and to strengthen global technology leadership. An evaluation panel composed of internal and external experts rigorously reviews patentability, technological merit, and business potential in the selection process.
Kim Dongmyeong, CEO of LG Energy Solution, stated, "In the battery industry, patents are a powerful weapon for maintaining global competitiveness and a source of customer value," and added, "We will continue to provide full support for the R&D environment to ensure that our members’ creative challenges bear fruit and to secure overwhelming technology leadership."
