Munhang Village in Namhae Selected for Oceans Ministry Advancement Project... Set to Become a 'Stay-Type Tourism Hub'
A Total of 800 Million Won Secured from National and Local Budgets
Comprehensive Renovation of Outdated Information Center and Accommodation Facilities
Creation of Family-Friendly Lodging and Shared Lounge
Project Expected to Meet Growing Demand for Workation Tourism
Munhang Fishing Village Experience and Recreation Village in Namhae County, South Gyeongsang Province, has been finally selected for the "Fishing Village Experience and Recreation Village Advancement Project" led by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
On May 15, the county announced, "Munhang Village was selected as one of the final four out of 18 applicant villages nationwide," adding, "With this selection, we have secured a total project budget of 800 million won."
This public offering was carried out through both a document and on-site evaluation by a selection committee that included external experts. The committee comprehensively assessed business feasibility, operational capability, and regional connectivity to determine the target sites.
Munhang Village is a nationally recognized experiential tourism destination, known for its so-called "Miracle of Moses" phenomenon where the sea road opens twice daily, as well as its abundant mudflat ecological resources such as clams and ghost shrimp. In particular, since 2015, the village has maintained an excellent rating in all categories of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' Fishing Village Experience and Recreation Village evaluation, demonstrating its operational competitiveness.
However, there have been ongoing concerns over the lack of stay-type tourism infrastructure due to the aging of the village information center and accommodation facilities, which were established in 2003. As a result, a significant number of visitors would leave for nearby areas after their experience, highlighting a limitation.
Namhae County plans to completely remodel the outdated information center building into a two-story facility (with a total floor area of 331.12 square meters) as part of this project. The plan is to transform the site into a multi-purpose stay complex that meets the needs of workation travelers by providing family-friendly rooms as well as a shared lounge where visitors can combine work and relaxation.
The county expects that this project will have a positive effect on revitalizing the local economy, including increased length of stay and expanded tourism consumption.
