Police Charge Suspect with Child Abuse Resulting in Death
A woman in her twenties has been arrested on charges of causing the death of her newborn after giving birth in a motel room. On May 14, Kim Ji-hyun, a judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Southern District Court, conducted a pretrial detention hearing for Ms. Kim, who is under suspicion of child abuse resulting in death, and issued an arrest warrant, stating, "There is a risk of flight."
Ms. Kim is accused of causing the death of her baby after giving birth in a motel located in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, this past February. After giving birth, Ms. Kim called 119 for help, but when emergency responders arrived at the scene, the baby was already deceased. During police questioning, Ms. Kim reportedly claimed that she was unaware of her pregnancy. However, during the investigation, Ms. Kim's obstetric medical records were found, and it was revealed that the cause of the baby's death was drowning.
