Jo Wonhwi Pledges to Transform Stagnant Yuseong into a New Yuseong
Early Completion of Complex Terminal and Progress on Jijok Tunnel Achieved During Tenure as Daejeon City Council Chairman
Jo Wonhwi, the People Power Party candidate for Yuseong District Chief, stated, "This election is not only important for keeping the government in check, but also to choose the right person who can revitalize Yuseong, which has been stagnant for too long." He added, "For the past 16 years, a single party has monopolized power in Yuseong, resulting in stagnation. I will change this administrative paradigm and create a new Yuseong with fresh ideas and approaches."
In an interview on May 13, Jo remarked, "Over the past 16 years, the current Yuseong district administration has been a stagnant period, with nothing notable except for festivals." He specifically mentioned the delays in constructing the Yuseong Complex Terminal, emphasizing his ability to deliver results: "For 12 years, the previous mayor and district chief could not resolve this issue, but during my time as council chairman, I worked with Mayor Lee Jangwoo, and together we managed to launch construction within just one year."
He further stated, "A particular candidate's bid for a third term only causes fatigue among residents. Claiming to accomplish in the next four years what could not be done in the past eight lacks credibility. Now is the time for someone new to redraw the map of Yuseong."
As a solution to revitalize the stagnant Yuseong Hot Springs Tourism Special Zone, Jo proposed a "new night economy" initiative. He explained, "On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, we will open up public facilities such as administrative welfare centers and cultural centers, creating a nightlife ecosystem where culture and commerce come together." He added, "Through this, we will substantially increase the income of small business owners and self-employed individuals."
He also introduced a plan to fundamentally revive the commercial area near Yuseong Hotel by collaborating with the Ministry of National Defense to remodel or rebuild Gyeryong Spatel as the nation's largest recreation facility for veterans. This, he said, would attract 800,000 veterans and their families from across the country to visit Yuseong.
Regarding transportation issues, Jo pledged to push forward with the long-awaited Jijok Tunnel project in the region. He stated, "After the launch of the eighth popularly-elected district administration, I secured KRW 100 million in research funding as chairman of the Daejeon City Council. We will resolve the severe traffic congestion around the terminal and Noeun-dong area by constructing the Jijok Tunnel."
