Ministry of Government Legislation Holds Constitution Lecture and Writing Challenge at Gwanghwamun
Guerrilla Constitution Lecture Kicks Off,
Handwriting Challenge Continues Through Constitution Day
The Ministry of Government Legislation (headed by Joung Chul Cho) announced on May 11 that it will hold a "nationwide participatory online and offline campaign" to reflect on constitutional values, in celebration of the designation of Constitution Day as a public holiday and the establishment of National Sovereignty Day (December 3). The campaign will run from May through Constitution Day (July 17).
The main event of the campaign, the "Gwanghwamun Constitution Guerrilla Lecture," will be held at Gwanghwamun Yukjo Square on May 12 and will be led by history lecturer Taesung Choi. Public participation programs will also follow. The ministry plans to produce special content featuring the voices of 717 citizens answering the question, "What does the Constitution mean to you?" In addition, a "Writing the Constitution by Hand" challenge will be launched, and "Constitution Edition Monami 153 Pens" will be distributed. Through this event, the ministry aims to encourage citizens to write out constitutional provisions themselves.
An official from the Ministry of Government Legislation stated, "This event was organized to demonstrate that the Constitution is not merely a set of legal texts but a practical value that has protected the daily lives of the people and a precious legacy to be handed down to future generations." Since January, the ministry has promoted the popularization of constitutional principles by launching a nationwide public lecture on the Constitution and signing a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, and the Constitutional Court to strengthen constitutional education in schools.
