Five Basic Local Government Heads, 24 Metropolitan Council Members, and 62 Basic Council Members Nominated
Honam Regional Nomination Convention to Be Held in Gangjin on the 12th
The Gwangju branch of the Democratic Party of Korea has finalized 104 candidates who will run in the local elections scheduled for June 3 in the Gwangju area. The proportion of female candidates was close to half, and the number of young candidates reached double digits.
On May 9, the Gwangju branch of the Democratic Party of Korea announced that it had finalized a total of 104 candidates: 5 for heads of basic local governments, 24 for metropolitan council members, 62 for basic council members, 3 for metropolitan proportional representation, and 10 for basic proportional representation. Although the total number of available candidate slots is 105, one candidate was not nominated for the Gwangsan-gu Ra district, which elects three Gwangsan-gu council members.
The Democratic Party explained that it prioritized female and youth candidates in this nomination process. Out of the 104 total candidates, 50 are women, accounting for 48.1%. Among the 72 basic council candidates, 36 are women, making up about half, and 12 candidates are under 45 years old.
The average age of the candidates was 53.2. By age group, there are 48 candidates in their 50s (the largest group), followed by 29 in their 60s, 21 in their 40s, and 6 in their 30s.
The candidates for heads of basic local governments are as follows: Lim Taek for Dong-gu, Kim Ikang for Seo-gu, Kim Byeongnae for Nam-gu, Shin Sujeong for Buk-gu, and Park Byeonggyu for Gwangsan-gu.
Candidates for metropolitan council members total 24, including 2 for Dong-gu, 4 for Seo-gu, 5 for Nam-gu, 8 for Buk-gu, and 5 for Gwangsan-gu.
The candidates for metropolitan proportional representation are: Lee Soonhwa (representing the disabled community), Park Minyoung (representing youth), and Park Man (representing labor).

The Democratic Party of Korea plans to hold a nomination convention for the Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk Honam region at 4 p.m. on May 12 at the 2nd Indoor Gymnasium in Gangjin, Jeonnam, where they will pledge to win the local elections.
