President Lee: "Toward a Nation Where the State and Community, Not Just Parental Sacrifice, Share Responsibility"
President Lee’s Parents’ Day Message
“Today’s Korea Stands on the Foundation of Parents’ Devotion”
“Expanded Support for Caregiving, Dementia Asset Management, Senior Jobs, and Pension Reform”
On May 8, President Lee Jaemyung marked Parents’ Day by stating, “We will strive to build a 'nation where people are happy,' where the state and the community, not just the unilateral sacrifices of parents, share responsibility together.”
President Lee made these remarks in a statement titled “To Parents Who Have Willingly Embraced the World of Being a Child,” which he posted on his Facebook account that day. He said, “On the 54th Parents’ Day, I extend my deepest respect and gratitude to all parents in this country who dedicate themselves to their families and to the nation.”
President Lee commented, “A parent lives bearing the weight of as many worlds as they have children,” and added, “It was only after becoming the father of two children that I truly understood this.” He continued, “The times when parents gave their support unconditionally, helped their children get back up every time they fell, and set aside their own present for the sake of their children’s future—on the foundation of this silent dedication stands today’s Republic of Korea.”
President Lee recognized the sacrifices of the parental generation as the foundation for Korea’s growth. He stated, “The earnest desire to leave a better world to one’s beloved children is the root of this country and the driving force of its prosperity and development.” He emphasized, “The more we can lighten the burdens our parents carry on their shoulders, the more Korea will be able to move step by step toward becoming a truly advanced nation.”
President Lee presented care and old-age security as core responsibilities the state must assume. He said, “The birth and care of a child must be able to blossom into pure joy,” and continued, “Parents who have devoted their entire lives should be able to enjoy a happy old age without worry. Only then can everyone look forward to tomorrow and dream of a better future.”
President Lee also mentioned the government’s policy initiatives to support the elderly. He said, “The People’s Sovereignty Government is preparing institutional measures to guarantee a healthy and vibrant old age, such as community-integrated care, dementia-safe asset management services, the largest-ever 1.15 million jobs for seniors, and improvements to irrational pension systems.”
Previously, the government announced plans to provide a record 1,152,000 jobs for seniors this year. Last year, President Lee also met with officials from the Korean Senior Citizens Association and explained policies for the elderly, including community-integrated care, increased basic pensions, and expanded job opportunities for seniors.
