Lee Jeongseon: "Devastated by Student Crime in Gwangju... We Must Strengthen Society's Safety Net"
On May 5, Lee Jeongseon, a preliminary candidate for the Superintendent of Integrated Education for Jeonnam and Gwangju, issued a statement regarding the student stabbing incident that occurred in downtown Gwangju. He expressed, "I am deeply saddened and devastated by the fact that a high school student has died as a result of a crime, and another student has been injured and is currently receiving treatment."
Candidate Lee offered his condolences to the deceased and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family, while also wishing for the swift recovery of the injured student.
He stated, "Safety must be the top priority in our society above all else," and pledged, "I will do everything I can to establish a comprehensive and effective safety net that fully protects students in their daily lives so that such incidents never occur again."
He further promised, "I will do my utmost to restore the responsibility of education and create an environment where children can live in safety and peace."

That afternoon, Candidate Lee visited the funeral home where a memorial altar for the student victim was set up, paid his respects, and commemorated the deceased. Earlier, at around 12:11 a.m., a female high school student (referred to as A) was fatally stabbed by an assailant near a university in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, while another student (referred to as B), who tried to help, was seriously injured and is currently receiving hospital treatment.
