Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party, commented on May 5 regarding the Democratic Party's ongoing push for a 'special prosecutor on the fabricated indictment case,' stating, "Canceling a prosecution does not erase the crime committed. In the end, the addition of an illegal and unconstitutional prosecution cancellation will only result in harsher punishment."
During a press conference held at the National Assembly that morning, Jang targeted President Lee Jaemyung, saying, "He is proposing to appoint a special prosecutor to clear his own crimes. This is an unprecedented idea that even most dictators would not consider," adding, "He is writing a dictatorship guidebook that will go down in world history."
(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Kwangmo Hwang = Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party, strongly criticized the ruling party's push for a special prosecutor investigating the 'prosecutorial fabricated indictment' during a press conference held at the National Assembly on May 5, 2026. hkmpooh@yna.co.kr (End)

Although the presidential office hastily issued a statement yesterday, the conclusion is that Lee Jaemyung has ordered them to ensure the prosecution is canceled no matter what, but to simply delay the timing." He further emphasized, "Whether the prosecution is canceled now or later, a self-serving cancellation is ultimately a serious crime. Even after the local elections, something unconstitutional does not become constitutional."
Regarding internal opposition, including from Kim Taeheum, the gubernatorial candidate for South Chungcheong Province, to Jeong Jinseok, former presidential chief of staff, applying for the party nomination in the Gongju, Buyeo, and Cheongyang by-elections, Jang stated, "The nomination committee will make the decision, but I believe their decision will not be unrelated to the views of the party leader and leadership," adding, "We will carry out the nominations in a way that the public can accept and that ensures victory in the overall elections."
When asked about Assemblywoman Han Jia and others supporting Han Donghoon, former People Power Party leader, who is running as an independent candidate in the Busan Buk-gap by-election, he said, "If someone became a member of the National Assembly through the party's nomination, they have roles and responsibilities," and added, "We will clarify the facts surrounding the various situations currently unfolding and take any necessary actions afterward."
