Korea GM Surpasses 2 Million Small SUVs Produced in Six Years
Trax Crossover and Trailblazer Achieve Global Success
General Motors (GM) Korea (Korea GM) announced on April 30 that cumulative production of its small sport utility vehicles (SUVs) has surpassed 2 million units in six years.
This figure represents the combined cumulative production of the Chevrolet Trax Crossover and the Trailblazer (including derivative models). The Trax Crossover, launched in 2023, is an entry-level crossover model that blends the sophisticated design of a sedan with the practicality of an SUV, while the Trailblazer, introduced in 2020, has established itself as a steady seller for the Chevrolet brand. Both models have made significant contributions to Korea GM's cumulative production of 13.4 million units from its launch in 2002 through March of this year.
Korea GM has developed a competitive product portfolio to address the growing global demand for small SUVs. Small SUV models produced in Korea are experiencing strong demand in global markets such as North America, South America, and Central Asia, driving GM's global sales performance.
The Trax Crossover and Trailblazer, for which Korea GM is responsible for the entire process from planning and design to engineering and production, recorded total sales of 422,792 units in the U.S. market last year, capturing approximately 43% of the small SUV segment share.
Ashif Qutty, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, GM International, stated, "Achieving the 2 million production milestone is a meaningful indicator of the strategic importance of the Korean operation within GM’s global production network. As vehicles produced in Korea continue to see sustained demand and success in global markets, GM will further strengthen the competitiveness of its Korean operation through continued investment."
Lee Dongwoo, Vice President of Manufacturing at GM Korea, said, "The Bupyeong and Changwon plants have become core hubs for GM’s global small SUV production, based on advanced automation facilities and world-class quality competitiveness. With a highly developed manufacturing environment and stable production systems, we are responding flexibly to the diverse demands of the global market."
