Gyeonggi Fire Department to Conduct Fire Safety Inspections at 33 Aging Hazardous Materials Facilities
The Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters will conduct fire safety inspections from April 27 to June 19 on aging hazardous materials facilities within the province that are considered at risk for major accidents.
This inspection effort is being carried out with a focus on preemptively eliminating risk factors that could lead to large-scale disasters, taking into account the high concentration of hazardous materials facilities characteristic of Gyeonggi-do.
The inspection will cover a total of 33 sites operated by 15 companies, including hazardous materials manufacturing plants handling more than 3,000 times the designated quantity and facilities that have gone more than 10 years since their last detailed regular inspection.
The inspection will be conducted by a joint public-private inspection team, consisting of the headquarters, local fire stations, the Korea Fire Institute, and private sector experts, based on a four-year safety management cycle.
The main inspection items include: ▲ compliance with location, structure, and facility standards for hazardous materials manufacturing plants; ▲ compliance with storage and handling standards for hazardous materials and crackdowns on unauthorized hazardous materials; ▲ and the establishment of crisis response systems in the event of an accident.
Any minor issues identified during the inspection will be corrected on-site immediately, while serious legal violations or safety threats will be dealt with strictly in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

Choi Yongcheol, Acting Director of the Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, "Because a single accident at a hazardous materials facility can lead to a major disaster, we will focus not only on inspections but also on rectifying risk factors on the spot. We aim to prevent accidents in advance through proactive management of aging and high-risk facilities."
