After 'Murder' Driver, Two Jinju Cargo Solidarity Union Members Detained
Non-Union Member Arrested for Murder After Truck Incident
Union Members Detained for Obstructing Special Official Duties by Threatening Police
The police have arrested two members of the Cargo Solidarity Division of the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union (KPTU), affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), on charges of obstructing the performance of special official duties in connection with demonstrations following the death of a union member.
An official from the National Police Agency stated on April 27, "Immediately after the fatal accident, a dedicated investigation team was formed, and a swift investigation was launched. The suspect was detained on April 23 on charges of murder and special assault, and additional investigations are ongoing." A non-union member in his 40s, identified as A, was arrested for allegedly driving a truck into union members in front of the CU Jinju Logistics Center in Jeongchon-myeon, Jinju-si, Gyeongnam, during the Cargo Solidarity rally on April 20, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to two others.
On the afternoon of the 21st, near the BGF Logistics Jinju Center in Jeongchon-myeon, Jinju, Gyeongnam, where the 'Resolution Rally Demanding the Truth Investigation and Punishment of Those Responsible for the Death of Cargo Solidarity Union Members' was held, the cargo truck involved in the accident that occurred the day before was parked. A union member in his 50s, identified as B, was detained for threatening the police during a self-harm disturbance with a weapon at the protest site on April 19. Another union member in his 60s, identified as C, was detained for allegedly injuring a police officer by driving a van through a police barricade on April 20. In both cases, the police have booked one additional related person without detention and are continuing their investigation.
The standoff between the Cargo Solidarity and BGF Logistics, which has escalated following the union member's death, is expected to become protracted. While Kim Young-hoon, Minister of Employment and Labor, has called for structural improvements and identified the company as the "de facto principal contractor," unforeseen variables such as the company's request for an injunction have once again cast uncertainty over the situation.
