HJ Heavy Industries Secures Additional Order for Two 10,000 TEU-Class Container Ships Worth KRW 357.2 Billion
Number of Orders Increases to Four Following Initial Contract Earlier This Year
HJ Heavy Industries (CEO Yoo Sangcheol) has secured an additional order for two 10,100 TEU-class container ships worth a total of KRW 357.2 billion from a European shipowner.
This order follows the company’s first-ever contract for a large container ship exceeding 10,000 TEU, which was secured at the Busan Yeongdo Shipyard in February this year. With this latest contract, HJ Heavy Industries has secured orders for a total of four vessels of the same class.
As a result, productivity and profitability are expected to improve through the "repetitive construction effect," which enhances the efficiency of design, procurement, and production processes.
The newly ordered vessels are based on an eco-friendly container ship model independently developed by HJ Heavy Industries. The company advanced the existing 7,700–9,000 TEU-class design to the largest specifications that can be constructed at the Yeongdo Shipyard dock. The ships feature expanded deck and cargo hold space, as well as optimized designs that prioritize process efficiency and safety.
Environmental compliance capabilities have also been strengthened. The vessels are equipped with desulfurization equipment (scrubbers) in accordance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, and will also feature an Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) system, which allows the engines to be turned off and shore power to be used while docked in port.
HJ Heavy Industries has also completed the development of an LNG dual-fuel (LNG DF) propulsion model based on the same class of vessel. The company plans to broaden shipowners’ options in response to future demand for eco-friendly fuel conversion.
