Paju City in Gyeonggi Province will begin accepting first-round applications for the government’s ‘High Oil Price Damage Support Fund’ to support citizens’ daily lives starting April 27. Payments will be made via credit/debit card or local currency (Paju Pay). The support funds must be used by August 31, 2026, from the payment date; any unused balance will be automatically forfeited after the deadline.
To prevent congestion during the first week of applications, a ‘day-of-the-week system’ based on the last digit of applicants’ birth years will be in effect. Eligible applicants by day are: ▲Monday (1, 6) ▲Tuesday (2, 7) ▲Wednesday (3, 8) ▲Thursday (4, 9, 5, 0).
For credit/debit cards, applications can be submitted online via the respective card company’s website or app, or in person at a bank branch affiliated with the card. For local currency (Paju Pay), existing users may apply for a recharge through the Gyeonggi Local Currency App or by visiting their local administrative welfare center on weekdays from 09:00 to 18:00. For those without a card, one can be issued immediately on-site.
Paju City is also operating a ‘visiting application service’ for digitally vulnerable residents. Elderly or disabled individuals who live alone and have difficulty moving can request a home visit by contacting their local administrative welfare center, where a staff member will visit to process the application.
Meanwhile, there is heightened concern about text message payment scams (smishing) and spam messages impersonating government agencies and financial institutions. The government and card companies will not send any messages containing internet addresses (URLs) regarding this support fund. Therefore, if you receive a message prompting you to visit a website, do not click the link and delete the message immediately.
The second application period will run from May 18 to July 3. Eligibility will expand to cover up to 70% of the population, including recipients of the Basic Livelihood Security Program, the near-poor, and single-parent households. Those who missed the first round can apply during the second period. However, if both rounds are missed, support funds cannot be provided, so it is essential to apply within the designated period.
