Opening Statements from Yang Hyangja, Lee Seongbae, and Ham Jingyu
"We Must Overcome Despair and Courageously Discuss the Future"
On April 26, preliminary candidates for the Gyeonggi Province Governor from the People Power Party sharpened their criticism of Assemblywoman Choo Mi-ae, the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate for Gyeonggi Province Governor, during a primary debate. They also presented their vision to resolve chronic traffic congestion and the regional gap in the southern part of Gyeonggi Province, issues that exist beneath the surface of Gyeonggi as South Korea's leading economic and industrial city.
That afternoon, the People Power Party held the '9th Gyeonggi Province Governor Primary Vision Debate' for the nationwide local elections, organized by the party. The debate was attended by Yang Hyangja, Supreme Council member and preliminary candidate; Lee Seongbae, former MBC announcer; and Ham Jingyu, former Assemblyman, who are all running as preliminary candidates for Gyeonggi Province Governor from the party.
In his opening remarks, former Assemblyman Ham stated, "South Korea has become a 'Lee Jae-myung Bulletproof Republic,' veering toward dictatorship, and there is not a single positive piece of news regarding inflation, real estate, or transportation." He continued, "At times like this, the opposition party should offer hope, but things are in disarray," adding, "However, we cannot just sit around lamenting. We must overcome despair, muster courage, and discuss the future."
Ham went on to say, "The People Power Party candidate that Choo Mi-ae, the Democratic Party's left-handed pitcher, fears most is the authentic right-handed slugger, the home run hitter, Ham Jingyu." He added, "The governorship is not a position won by words alone; without competence, experience, and stability, it's a strikeout. If I become the candidate, I will form the strongest 'One Team' with all candidates running in the 31 cities and counties."
Supreme Council member Yang said, "The general election against Choo Mi-ae is a battle between a fighter and a worker, and between a legal technician and a cutting-edge industry expert." She further stated, "This election is about Yang Hyangja and the citizens of Gyeonggi Province driving out the candidate Choo Mi-ae, who is ashamed of Gyeonggi Province," pointing out that "People Power Party leader Jang Donghyuk also acknowledged that Yang Hyangja is the nemesis of Choo Mi-ae."
She continued, "Gyeonggi Province is the number one province in South Korea for exports, and 80% of semiconductors are produced here. With a gross regional domestic product (GRDP) of 650 trillion won, it is a super-large economic city." She emphasized, "We urgently need a competent governor who can foster advanced industries in this land of national defense and mountains. I will showcase the People Power Party's capabilities."
Former announcer Lee commented, "In Gyeonggi Province, commutes are long, housing costs are high, and the gap between the northern and southern regions persists. While the industry has grown, the results have not translated into improved lives for the residents." He added, "I will not solve these problems based on intuition. I will listen on-site, analyze with data, and connect the findings to policies."

He also mentioned, "The Gyeonggi Province I envision is where jobs are linked to housing, housing is connected to education and transportation, and culture and leisure thrive within that fabric. I will get Gyeonggi Province, which has come to a standstill, moving again." He further stated, "I will unite the scattered Gyeonggi Province into one and make the heart of Gyeonggi beat anew."
