HD Hyundai Becomes First Korean Company to Win U.S. Office of Naval Research Warship Performance Project
Expanding Collaboration with the U.S. Navy in the Warship Sector

HD Hyundai announced on the 26th that it has recently secured two core research projects from the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) aimed at improving warship performance.
This marks the first time a Korean company has signed a project contract with the U.S. Office of Naval Research. The ONR, under the United States Department of the Navy, is the central institution responsible for overseeing science and technology research and development (R&D) utilized by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

View original imageThrough this contract, HD Hyundai will undertake a project to enhance warship performance using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Based on its advanced digital shipbuilding technologies, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Seoul National University (Professor Yonghwan Kim) will jointly carry out the technology development.
HD Hyundai has also secured a project to develop technology that increases productivity in warship construction, leveraging its advanced manufacturing capabilities. This research will be led by the Future Technology Research Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. With these project wins, HD Hyundai emphasized that it has become a key partner in joint research with the U.S. Navy, spanning from warship development to construction. The company particularly highlighted the significance of being recognized by the U.S. Navy for its advanced technological capabilities in the warship sector.
