View original imageAccording to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other sources on April 23, Special Envoy Jeong met with Minister Araghchi in Tehran, Iran on the 22nd (local time), and asked for continued attention to the safety of the approximately 40 Korean nationals in Iran, as well as 26 Korean vessels and their crews.
He also requested special cooperation from the Iranian side to ensure the swift and safe passage of all ships, including Korean vessels.
Special Envoy Jeong conveyed greetings from Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun, referenced the two phone calls previously held between the foreign ministers of the two countries, and mentioned recent humanitarian assistance of 500,000 dollars provided through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He expressed hope that Korea-Iran relations would continue to develop. He also stated his expectation that peace and stability in the region would be restored swiftly through the resumption of negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Minister Araghchi said, "I highly appreciate Minister Cho's decision to send a special envoy under difficult circumstances and the uninterrupted work of the Korean embassy," adding, "I hope that the relationship between the two countries will continue to develop in a stable manner." He also stated that he will continue to pay close attention to ensuring the safety of Korean nationals in Iran.

This meeting was arranged after the Iranian side contacted Korea on the same day and took place at 6 p.m. local time. After being urgently dispatched to Iran on April 10, Special Envoy Jeong has held meetings with the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs, and Director-General for Consular Affairs to discuss issues related to Korea-Iran relations, the need to guarantee the safety of Korean nationals, and the importance of ensuring the safety of all vessels and crew in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the schedule for Special Envoy Jeong's return to Korea has not yet been determined.
