'A Premium Era for Cacti!'... Gyeonggi-do Develops New Astrophytum Varieties
The Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services has developed two new Astrophytum cactus varieties, 'Gold Eye' and 'Shy Star,' to expand the cactus market and enhance added value.
Astrophytum is a cactus species known for its distinctive star-shaped appearance, making it highly popular among plant enthusiasts. With few spines and easy maintenance, it has attracted attention as a companion plant. However, slow growth and difficult propagation have limited its production expansion.
'Gold Eye' is a variety characterized by a yellow base with light green patterns. Its vivid coloration remains stable, and propagation is possible because offsets sprout when the main body is cut.
'Shy Star' features an orange base with a yellow-green hue. The strong color contrast and white hair that forms across the entire plant give it high ornamental value. More than 13 offsets can develop, demonstrating excellent propagation potential.
Improvements in cultivation methods are also anticipated. By applying grafting techniques to attach these varieties to Hylocereus rootstock, the production period can be reduced from the current three years to just 8 to 10 months. The sales price is also expected to be three to five times higher than that of conventional grafted cacti, which is likely to help increase farmers' incomes.
