According to the company, the product is designed to replicate the spike structures found on the wings of fossilized dragonflies—structures that remain preserved without microbial damage—and applies this concept as a protective barrier to maintain sterilization. After immediate sterilization, it leaves a protective film on the surface, which physically eliminates bacteria.
This study was conducted as a real-world, controlled comparative research involving five university hospitals: Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital at The Catholic University of Korea, Asan Medical Center, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Konkuk University Medical Center, and Gachon University Gil Medical Center.
The research team compared the effectiveness of Bio Spike Guard against the standard disinfection method in more than 160 locations, including 'dry zones' such as hospital bed rails and nurse stations—areas frequently contaminated by microorganisms—and 'wet zones' such as sinks and toilet lids.
Results showed that Bio Spike Guard maintained a significant reduction in microbial contamination (P<0.001) compared to baseline even after 1 hour, 6 hours, and 24 hours following disinfection. In contrast, the control group, which used the standard hospital disinfection method, did not show a statistically significant sterilization effect, and microbial regrowth occurred over time, failing to maintain the effect.
The company stated that the product demonstrated excellent efficacy in 'wet zones,' where bacterial concentrations are high and management is challenging. In the comparative analysis conducted one hour after disinfection, Bio Spike Guard produced a significantly greater reduction in microorganisms than the control group (P=0.004), underscoring its outstanding infection control performance in high-risk environments.
Professor Noh Deokhee, the first author of the article and an infectious disease specialist at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, commented, “This research is significant in that it directly verified the persistent sterilization effect of Bio Spike Guard on various contact surfaces within a real university hospital setting. It is impressive that the product proved effective with a single use even in areas that are difficult to manage for infection control.”
Professor Lee Donggun, the corresponding author and an infectious disease specialist at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, stated, “Infection control in clinical settings hinges on maintaining a continuous sterilized state rather than relying on one-time disinfection. The 24-hour persistent effect proven in this study offers a practical alternative for blocking hospital-acquired infections, including multidrug-resistant bacteria.”
