"Full-Stack AI Infrastructure and Ecosystem Needed"...IITP Releases MWC26 Review
An analysis report from the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) has highlighted the need for securing a Korean-style artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure full-stack strategy and fostering a robust ecosystem.
On March 24, the IITP published the 'IITP MWC26 Technical Review Report,' analyzing the exhibitions at MWC26, which took place in Barcelona, Spain, on March 2. The report introduced eight major technology trends.
The report focused on the trend of the “full-scale adoption of AI-native networks.” It noted that global operators are deploying AI-powered autonomous intelligent networks and building agentic AI-based operating systems, thereby embedding AI into their networks.
Other highlighted trends included: ▲A major transformation of base station roles through AI Radio Access Network (AI-RAN), which optimizes network data communication via AI ▲The shift of smartphones into agentic AI devices ▲Mobile World AI-China ▲Acceleration of AI-native 6G commercialization ▲Activation of business model transformation for telecommunications operators ▲AI glasses competition ▲The rise of satellite communications through the commercialization of standards-based Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), among the eight key technology trends.
Based on these findings, the IITP suggested five insights. It stressed that, to become one of the world’s top three AI powers, Korea must adopt a full-stack strategy centered on AI networks. It also argued that 6G competition now requires preemptive action at the 5G/5G-A stage, rather than merely “future preparation.” In addition, ▲the competition in telecommunications and networks has shifted from “equipment performance” to “operational intelligence index” ▲the expansion of 5G SA by domestic telecom operators and restructuring of revenue models ▲and the need for essential areas such as NTN and network integration for national AI infrastructure were emphasized.

Hong Jinbae, President of the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation, stated, “In the future, the countries that lead will not be those with more connections, but those with smarter connections.” He added, “To help Korea leap forward as an AI G3 powerhouse, we will strengthen the competitiveness of domestic industries with a full-stack strategy centered on AI networks and strive to lead the global market.”
