Busan Port Looks Ahead 30 Years... Proposes Sustainable Growth Strategy
Transitioning from a Simple Logistics Hub to an Industrial Platform
Emphasizing a Qualitative Leap Forward
The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) has unveiled a mid- to long-term development strategy to secure the future competitiveness of Busan Port.
The Korea Maritime Institute announced that, through the "Busan Port Mid- to Long-Term Development Strategy Research," it has proposed a direction for fostering Busan Port to enable sustainable growth for more than the next 30 years. This study goes beyond addressing immediate issues and focuses on redefining the functions and roles of Busan Port as an integrated system from a long-term perspective.
Busan Port, which has served as a key gateway for South Korea's imports and exports over the past 150 years, is now facing structural changes such as the reorganization of global supply chains, digital transformation based on artificial intelligence (AI), and strengthened environmental regulations. In particular, fragmented operational systems, an industrial structure centered on low value-added activities, insufficient cargo diversification, and inadequate responses to carbon neutrality have been identified as major challenges.
Accordingly, the researchers emphasized that Busan Port must pursue qualitative transformation, not just quantitative expansion of cargo volume. They analyzed that the port’s functions should be upgraded, and it should be transformed from a traditional logistics hub into a complex industrial base linked with advanced industries.
The study also highlighted the importance of a strategic approach to strengthen Busan Port's status as a global hub in preparation for the commercialization of future Arctic shipping routes, and to establish a foundation for sustainable growth.
