Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju to Invest 12 Billion Won in Flood-Prone Area Maintenance... 31 Projects to Be Completed Before Rainy Season
Focused Improvements at Eight Locations Including Sinchang-dong and Heukseok Intersection
Expansion of Detention Facilities and Drainage Pump Stations
Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, is launching maintenance projects in areas prone to flooding in preparation for heavy summer rainfall. The district plans to invest a total of 12 billion won to implement 31 disaster prevention projects, including sewer system upgrades and expansion of disaster prevention facilities, all to be completed before the start of the rainy season.
On March 19, Gwangsan-gu announced that it is concentrating its administrative resources on establishing a proactive response system, as damage from unpredictable and increasingly severe downpours due to climate change has become a recurring issue. The key objective for this year is to improve the overall urban structure and water management functions, going beyond post-disaster recovery or simple facility maintenance.
First, the district will carry out maintenance in areas with chronic flooding. Eight locations have been selected, including the Furniture Street in Sinchang-dong, Heukseok Intersection, and Bongsan Village in Sanwol-dong, all of which experienced damage from heavy rainfall last year.
Furniture Street in Sinchang-dong has repeatedly suffered flooding during extreme rainfall due to poor drainage in low-lying sections. The district plans to improve drainage capacity by installing a new 160-meter stormwater pipeline. At Heukseok Intersection, flood prevention efforts will include installing a new sewer pipeline, repairing existing pipelines, and expanding the number of catch basins. Sewer facilities in other areas, such as Bongsan Village in Sanwol-dong, will also undergo intensive maintenance.
The district will also proceed with the construction of a detention facility in the Usan area, aiming for completion in May. The facility will be able to store 9,660 tons of rainwater, which is expected to significantly help prevent flooding in Usan-dong and surrounding areas.
Additional efforts include strengthening the function of the Donggok Drainage Pump Station, expanding the capacity of temporary pumping stations in Seho Village and Singi Village, and installing remote-control equipment for the floodgate at Pyeongdong Stream. The district will also add 300 safety devices to prevent manhole accidents and replace 325 aging manholes.
Some projects, such as the installation of stormwater pipelines in the Hanam Industrial Complex area, will be implemented in phases. The district will also seek additional project funding and secure national government subsidies through official requests.
