KT Achieves Phishing Prevention with AI... Damage Reports Down 25%
KT announced on March 16 that it has blocked approximately 9,800 suspected phishing numbers within two months after introducing a system that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to preemptively block numbers suspected of being involved in phishing crimes.
This outcome is the result of KT's collaboration since last year with the National Police Agency’s Integrated Response Team for Telecommunications Financial Fraud to extract 'AI-based suspected phishing numbers' in an effort to reduce phishing crime damages.
Since November of last year, KT and the National Police Agency have built and, since January, have been operating a system called 'Circuit Breaker' that urgently blocks calls and text messages from suspected phishing numbers. When the National Police Agency requests the extraction of suspected phishing numbers, an AI model developed by the KT Future Network Research Institute automatically screens them. The numbers identified as suspicious by AI are immediately blocked, and if there is no appeal within a week, use of the number is suspended.
Through this system, KT was able to block 9,822 suspected phishing numbers on its network. According to the National Police Agency, the number of actual phishing damage reports also decreased by about 2,700 cases (25%), from 10,496 cases to 7,843 cases, when comparing the six-week periods before and after the system’s implementation.
In particular, 'agency impersonation' phishing, in which scammers pose as public institutions, fell by 44%, and 'loan fraud impersonation' phishing, in which scammers pose as financial institutions and use loans as a pretext to steal money, decreased by 40%.
KT plans to establish a 24-hour real-time response system through ongoing cooperation with the National Police Agency.
