Busan International Film Festival Selected as FIAPF 'A-list' Festival
FIAPF Overhauls Accreditation System
Busan Reaffirms Its A-List Status Alongside Cannes and Berlin
The Busan International Film Festival announced on the 16th that it has been selected as an 'A-list' festival alongside Cannes, Berlin, and Venice in the newly reorganized international film festival accreditation system by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).
Established in 1933, FIAPF is an organization that certifies the credibility of international film festivals. Previously, it classified festivals into four categories, such as competitive and non-competitive, but recently abolished these divisions and introduced a new accreditation system that evaluates the overall capabilities of each festival.
The new A-list indicator assesses a festival's genuine international influence regardless of genre or format. It is determined based on two years of quantitative and qualitative data across four categories: film selection, industry engagement, media and publicity, and screenings and audience. Florence Girot, FIAPF’s Executive Director, explained, "This change aims to strengthen the film festival ecosystem and reaffirm the role of festivals as key partners in the industry."
The Busan International Film Festival, which was launched in 1996, received FIAPF accreditation the following year and has served as a member of the FIAPF Film Festival Committee since 2018. Hanseok Jung, Executive Director of the Busan International Film Festival, stated, "It is highly significant to be recognized by an organization that evaluates major film festivals around the world," adding, "As an A-list festival, we will further enhance our global standing."
